Communities across the country periodically conduct historical and architectural surveys to determine the locations of historic resources for planning purposes. In keeping with this goal, the City of Sarasota has conducted surveys of select areas periodically in the last few decades. Most notably, the entire City of Sarasota was surveyed over the course of 10 years beginning around 1997.

The principal survey instrument used for this purpose is the Florida Master Site File (FMSF). The FSMF is a database maintained by the Florida Division of Historical Resources that lists potentially significant historic and archaeological resources in communities around the state. In the early 2000’s the Arlington Park Neighborhood was surveyed again resulting in a recommendation for a historic district in Arlington Park.
